East Coast, West Coast Conventions!

March 11th, 2010

It makes me so happy to start going out to conventions again! I will be leaving late tomorrow afternoon, heading out to Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con!  I have a feeling this year is going to be record-breaking. Did you see the guests?!?! I’ll have to use all my willpower to stay behind the booth and not line up with everyone else.  I’m in Artist Alley, table C01-C02.  Come and see me!!! (at the Washington State Convention Center).

I made a little contribution to ECCC in the form of a new version of the Pseudo’s Daughter collab piece, with Jared Nickerson of J3 Concepts.   This will be part of the Monsters and Dames collector’s book that ECCC publishes each year. All proceeds from the sale go to charity.

Then, all the way over on the other side of the country, in Orlando, Nancy, who a lot of you will now know is the spirit and gladiator behind the online store, will be taking our show on the road too! So we’re tag-teaming the conventions, oh yeah!  She’s gonna have a large booth at Mega Con, the hugely popular convention of comics, anime, gaming … it’s gonna be a blast so I hope that everyone in Florida who knows me, will go out and see Nancy!  I’m excited about this, and I hope that next year I can make it too!

Here is all the info:

March 6 & 7 Weekend Events

March 5th, 2010

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a convention – a REALLY long time! And after the winter non-con hibernation I’m looking forward to getting back into it!  And this weekend is going to be a fun way to ring in the convention season: on Sunday, March 7th I’ll be at the 1st Annual Hollywood North convention, in Burnaby, as a special guest! I’ll be giving a Q&A panel on how to break into the industry too.

And for those looking for a unique comic-art-party-event experience, you should come out to the Ayden Gallery on Saturday night for the official launch of the Cloudscape Exploded View Anthology.  Cloudscape Comics is a collective of some of Vancouver’s most unique (non-superhero) comics creators, artists, writers, etc. The group includes established artists, underground cartoonists, web comic creators, animators, illustrators, and manga artists all working together. Their focus is on telling meaningful, intelligent stories through the medium of comics. Jeff Ellis and the others at Cloudscape Comics have been working so hard not only to put the anthology together, but also to promote it.  They even got some good press in a local Vancouver Courier.

February 27th, 2010

Here’s a little treat, and a long time in the making! Cumalus is a hip hop artist with some seriously great beats and his first album just came out, called Flow(ER).  He is the first musician I have ever worked with on artwork, and here is the cover of his album. I am excited to be getting into more music-based collaborations, so I hope you enjoy the album artwork, and please support Cumalus by buying his album on iTunes.   You’ll love the tracks! Congratulations Cumalus!!

Live Paintings!

February 21st, 2010

Some old, some new …

I’ve escaped the city of Vancouver!  The madness is behind me, at least for this week coming up.  I was up at Cypress Mountain on Thursday, and I have to admit that it was a really amazing experience; I got to be a part of the Olympics, and it was special. I also got to watch some of the half pipe competition during my breaks. Seeing an Olympic sporting event live is something else!

For the painting itself, I got a big 8 foot panel to paint on, right at the foot of the venue’s finish.  The entire set of photos is on my Flickr page, and here are a few from the set:

If you’re wondering what the ‘old’ is, of the live painting photos, it is the Spectaction event from December!  At Spectaction I painted a new piece, plus I customized a Tanpopo giclee. More information about The Arts Benevolence League, and their spin on benefit events, check them out here.  This is a photo from the live paint, plus the entire set is on Flickr:

Opening reception runs from 7 pm to 10 pm, with after party at The Melk.

Kuro Glass Charms Have Landed

February 8th, 2010

I am happy to announce that the little glass charms of Kuro are here and ready to order! This collaboration with local British Columbian artisan Neacol Miller has been so much fun … seeing these little guys come to life has brought me squeals of enjoyment and I know it’ll be the same for anyone who gets their own!

Kuro prototype 2 copy

Kuro charms are limited edition of 250.  Each Kuro comes in his own black jewelry box, 18″ silver plated chain, cell phone charm strap and a signed certificate of authenticity printed on full color, heavy gloss stock paper.  Every single Kuro made is slightly unique, since they are individually hand crafted and may look different from the photos. You can order your own from my online store right now.

Many Kuros

Kuro charms will make their official retail debut at The Ayden Gallery on Saturday February 13th, during the gallery show, 5, which I am a part of!  I will also be at the show, since Ken knows how to put on a good party at The Ayden and we’re all revved up by Olympics fever.

Kuro Cell Charm

Glass charm Kuro is possible thanks to Neacol and her husband Stanley, Miller. They own Bling Squared Wearable Glass Sculptures and work out of Salt Spring Island. This is their website and they make some of the most adorable little glass charms you’ll ever see!  You can see and buy more of their creations here.  They are a husband and wife team and their inspiration comes from obsessions with Japanese animation, comic books, fashion, pop culture and their daughter. Kind of like me, except without the daughter ~_n!
